Built in 1223 for the Peter Mauclerc, Duke of Brittany, the keep is all that remains of a fortress on which building work was completed in the 15th century. By then, the fortress also had 10 towers marking out a quadrilateral measuring almost 140 yds. by 32 yds. (100 x 30 m). The ruins between the lake and a deep ravine (both of which were natural means of defence at the time) overlook a park that has been open to the public since 1989.
