The 3 ‘must see’ markets in Ille-et-Vilaine

It is simply unthinkable to visit Brittany without going to one of the markets in Ille-et-Vilaine ! Essential for filling your shopping basket with good things, markets are also lively places with plenty to see and do. Here is our selection of the three finest markets in the département.

MARCHÉ DES LICES AT RENNES, AN INSTITUTION

The second largest market in France, the Marché des Lices takes place every Saturday morning at the heart of Rennes, the capital of Brittany.

It is hard not sing the praises of this market in Rennes which combines tastes and aromas from both land and sea in a friendly, convivial atmosphere.

Brimful of good food, the Marché des Lices is also a meeting place where babies in pushchairs mingle with Friday-night party-goers. The venue itself is also well worth a look as the market is held in the famous Place des Lices inside two historic market halls and on the square outside, surrounded by half-timbered buildings.

And why not sit down at a pavement cafe to sample what you’ve bought and don’t forget to try a famous ‘galette-saucisse’ (a sort of sausage wrap) with or without cheese !

DINARD MARKET

The market at the seaside resort of Dinard on the Emerald Coast attracts many customers, both locals and visitors. It is well-known all along the coast for fresh, quality produce, much appreciated by foodies, and also for its typical atmosphere.

One part of the market is totally given over to fish. Here you can find locally caught fish, oysters, spider crabs, clams, mussels, and lots more.

Dinard market is held every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 08.00 to 13.00 at Place Crolard on the esplanade.

THE MARKET AT LA GUERCHE-DE-BRETAGNE

The market at La Guerche-de-Bretagne, an ancient village on the Brittany Marches is still one of the most impressive and picturesque in the whole of Brittany.

It plays host to between 100 and 150 traders from all over the region (almost 300 in summer). It is also one of the oldest markets as its origins go back to 1121. There are even guided tours run by the local Office de Tourisme to make the most of your visit. The conviviality and wide range of products on sale at the market even gave rise to a popular saying : « They’ve got everything there, just like at La Guerche. »

The market at La Guerche takes place every Tuesday morning in the town centre from 08.00 to 12.00.
