Near the Pointe de Cancaval is Montmarin Cove, a beauty spot not to be missed. Once a centre of shipbuilding, the small bay is now a veritable haven of peace and tranquillity, providing a magnificent panoramic view of the Rance River. Man has left his mark here, settling on every accessible piece of land and using it for farming or building tidal mills (the tide has been a source of power since the 18th century), one of which has survived in Montmarin. An ideal area for walking, centring on the superb country mansion built in 1760 for a ship owner from Saint-Malo which was to provide inspiration for one of Ille-et-Vilaine's most famous writers - Chateaubriand.
